Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport Mrs Lim Hwee Hua will be the Guest of Honour (GOH) at the Golden Jubilee Gala Dinner which marks the 50th anniversary of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology’s (IMarEST) operations in Singapore..

The gala dinner is the highlight of a series of celebrations organised by The Joint Branch of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (Singapore).

“We are looking forward to welcoming up to 500 key members of the marine community and their guests at the Dinner to be held on 14 November at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore,” said Dr Arun Kr. Dev, Chairman of the RINA & IMarEST Joint Branch (Singapore).,

“This is a highly auspicious celebratory event taking place when we have much to celebrate here in Singapore. Our shipyards and rig-building order books are full and there is a tremendous mood of enthusiasm and optimism. This will be an evening where many old friends meet and share a host of memories and reminiscences.”

Professor Choo Yoo Sang of the National University of Singapore, the 106th President of IMarEST, and the first President from Asia, is one of the principal speakers at the Dinner. “What superb timing that the celebrations should take place during my year of office!” he says. “I greatly value my own long association with the Branch, as do many of my colleagues in industry and academia. I am looking forward to meeting up with many of the early members of the Branch, as well as with younger and newer members.”

“Fifty years is a long time and something for all associated with the Branch, young and old, to be proud of,” says Keith Read, CBE, Chief Executive of IMarEST in the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Journal. “We salute you and look forward to many more illustrious years of all that is best in marine engineering, science and technology in Singapore. May your influence continue to grow and may you prosper in all you aspire to achieve.”

Brief history of IMarEST Singapore Branch
The inaugural meeting of the Singapore Branch (then called a Section) of what was then the Institute of Marine Engineers (IMarE)took place on 13 May 1958 and was attended by twenty one members - IMarE became IMarEST in 2001 encompassing marine scientists and technologists as well as marine engineers. The Branch became The Joint Branch of RINA and IMarEST (Singapore) on 23 January 2002 and there are currently over 600 members (349 IMarEST and 252 RINA).

Other links and alliances are important to the Institute such as the affiliation agreement signed between IMarEST and the Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore (SNAMES) in 2003 and the membership of PAAMES, the Pan Asian Association of Marine Engineering Societies.  IMarEST’s South East Asia Division (encompassing branches in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore), established in 2007, is making strong progress towards increasing opportunities in the maritime sector for the benefit of the Institute and its growing regional membership.
