IMarEST SET TO PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE AT HYDRO8

Two publications aimed at marine scientists will be featured by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) at the 16th European Hydro Conference - Hydro8, organised by the Hydrographic Society UK (Liverpool, 4-6 November).

’The Marine Scientist’ and ‘Journal of Operational Oceanography’ (JOO) will take pride of place on our stand at Hydro8 along with subscription details for both of them,” explains Dr Bev MacKenzie, Manager Technical Affairs who will be at the show. “We are looking forward too to encouraging participants at the show to join the Institute. Guidance and encouragement of scientists, engineers and technicians remains a key objective of the Institute; and that is why our global accreditation programme encompasses universities, specialist colleges and in-house training courses. It is imperative that IMarEST continues to encourage members of all ages to commit to a life of continuing professional development (CPD); indeed advice and support on CPD is one of the key benefits of membership.”

The IMarEST team on the stand at Hydro8 will be explaining the benefits of the Marine Partners corporate membership initiative and professional individual membership to visitors. Indeed as an added incentive, the Institute will be waiving the joining fee for any individuals who join at the stand during Hydro8.

The quarterly ‘The Marine Scientist’ makes essential reading for those working in marine science and technology disciplines including oceanographers, marine chemists, geoscientists, hydrographers, ecologists, marine management and policy makers. It regularly contains news, research, analysis, debates and views from the scientific community, reader letters, interviews, job advertisements, and marine science conferences worldwide.

Now in its second edition, JOO, the new international peer reviewed journal for the oceanography community is published twice a year, both in print and online. It is a collection of international research papers and technical reports. The current issue features an editorial on ‘Reaching out to users, decision makers and policy developers’ by Dr Richard W Spinrad PhD, CMarSci, FIMarEST; and peer reviewed papers on ‘A comparison of robust metamodels for the uncertainty quantification (UQ) of New York Harbor oceanographic data’; ‘The TOPAZ monitoring and prediction system for the Atlantic and Arctic oceans’; ‘Data assimilation of simulated SSS SMOS products in an ocean forecasting system’; ‘A remote sensing ocean portal for GMES Ocean’; ‘Delivering NCOF operational marine data through the Internet’; ‘A study of gas exchange during the transition from deep winter mixing to spring bloom in the Bay of Biscay measured by continuous observation from a ship of opportunity’; and ‘The pocket FerryBox – A new portable device for water quality monitoring in oceans and rivers’ by experts from the USA, Norway, France, UK and Germany.
