Every President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) stamps his mark on his year of office in many ways, one of which is the annual President’s Day Lecture. This year, the 105 th President, Dr David Wynford (‘Wyn’) Williams CB, the first scientist to take on the role, has come up with a novel twist that involves the three organisations for whom he has worked in a long and distinguished career.

“This will not be a protracted trip down memory lane though,” he explains. “Instead, having briefly outlined my career, and explained that working life was bound up in research and development with QinetiQ (or its forebears), the Royal Navy, and the UK Hydrographic Office (Dr Williams was National Hydrographer 2001-2006), I will hand over to Sir John Chisholm, Chairman of QinetiQ; Rear Admiral Philip Wilcocks DSC, Chief of Staff (Capability), CinC Fleet; and Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the UKHO to each give the audience a taste of where they see their organisations going and what the future holds for them.”

“Wyn’s idea is certainly out of the ordinary,” says Keith Read CBE, Chief Executive of IMarEST. “We are assured of fascinating insights into the future for British scientific and engineering research and development, the future role and capability of the Royal Navy, and the future of hydrography.

“We know that this novel ‘In Defence of the Future’ evening, will be enjoyed by all who attend. I am certainly looking forward not only to Wyn’s memories, but to hearing about the future of three key organisations as seen by our most distinguished panel of speakers. It is certainly a mark of the respect in which Wyn is held that all three agreed to speak with great alacrity.”

Attendance at the President’s Day Lecture, being held at the City Conference Centre, 80 Coleman Street, London EC2R 5BJ (the headquarters of IMarEST) is free of charge to members and non-members of IMarEST, however, reservation of a place is recommended. Tea will be served from 1700, the President’s Forum will begin at 1730 with discussion from 1830. Following the Forum, a buffet reception with wine will be held in the Ocean Suite for all who attend.

“We believe these networking post-Lecture sessions are extraordinarily worthwhile, enabling members and non-members to meet old friends and make new contacts while reliving the discussion points of the evening,” explains Keith Read.

There are three methods of reserving a place for the Forum. You can reserve a place online at www.imarest.org/events/presidentsday/2007 or download and complete a form from the same web address; or email: events [at] imarest [dot] org to say you will be attending.
