John Barnes, a highly experienced marine publication editor with a background in naval architecture, has been appointed editor of
MER – Marine Engineers Review, the official journal of The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) that has recently celebrated its 40 th anniversary.
“The opportunity to be editor of MER is an exciting challenge and I look forward to maintaining its high standards of editorial coverage over the next few years,” he explains. “It was particularly fascinating to be involved in the anniversary issue, my first as editor, as my own career spans the same 40 years or so, and many of the themes and comments we featured from our contributors revived personal memories for me.”
John Barnes studied naval architecture at Newcastle University 1965-68 concurrent with a Vickers Shipbuilding management apprenticeship. He moved to a tug and trawler builder in Hull as an assistant naval architect in 1970 before starting his journalistic career in 1971 with a spell on The Motor Ship. He became founder editor of Ocean Energy 1975-77; editor Marine Stores 1976; and editor of Safety at Sea 1977-1981. A 20-year period in PR then followed before he returned to journalism as editor of Safety at Sea 2001-2004, then returned to The Motor Ship 2004-2007 as editor.
MER’s status as an official magazine published by the IMarEST means it reaches a discerning and professional global readership - in key positions - with real and influential purchasing power. Issued ten times a year, MER offers one of the largest circulations of any professional international maritime publication. Its quality circulation and high ‘pass-on’ factor means that its true readership far exceeds its ABC audited circulation (11 697, Jan-Dec 2005). This is reinforced by its distribution at key industry shows around the world including Marintec China, Europort, Seatrade Cruise Miami and Norshipping.
The IMarEST also publishes Shipping World and Shipbuilder; Maritime IT and Electronics; The Journal of Offshore Technology; and Marine Scientist as well as books, newsletters and technical proceedings.
