Humberside Hosts Special Reception for the Marine Professional Community

The Humber region has long played a vital role in the development of the shipping industry, and so has been the natural choice for two international maritime professional bodies to launch a hugely important and influential series of talks promoting the best professional interests of those working in the marine sectors.

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the Nautical Institute together have over 500 professional members in the Hull area, many working in, or studying, marine engineering, nautical science and marine science and technology.

On 20 th September, the Chief Executives of these two leading international maritime professional institutes will be guest speakers at a special evening reception, to be held at Hotel Elizabeth in Ferriby High Street, North Ferriby, Kingston upon Hull.

Philip Wake, Chief Executive of the Nautical Institute, said “this joint Nautical Institute and IMarEST event will spotlight the work being undertaken by the two institutes to create a powerful voice for maritime professionals. We are keen to show how far our like-minded Institutes have come in founding closer and more effective ties. We are building on past co-operation and have recently agreed a Memorandum of Understanding to forge a more extensive and deeper working relationship. The presentations and the open forum debate are a pivotal and vital step in the development of a new face for maritime excellence, and part of the forward momentum towards a unified and strengthened professional ethos. It is intended that this will be the first of many such meetings around our international branch networks.”

Keith Read, the IMarEST’s Chief Executive, who will be joining Philip Wake as fellow Guest Speaker at the event, is keen for as many local marine professionals as possible to attend. I would like to encourage members of the IMarEST and Nautical Institute, and others who are not yet members, but who have a professional interest in things marine, to come along. It will be a great opportunity to make new contacts and see old friends. If you are a maritime or marine professional or seafarer and you are interested in professional recognition and being part of the growing international marine profession, this special evening event has been organised with you in mind, and we hope to have the honour of your company. Come and share your ideas and

learn something of what the institutes are doing jointly to provide a stronger professional voice, and about professional membership and international professional recognition.”

Iain Butterworth, Honorary Secretary of the IMarEST’s Kingston upon Hull and Humber branch and Captain Russ Garbutt, Chairman of the NI’s Humber branch, are leading the team organising the special reception. They are delighted that Hull is the focus for the first of these events. "The Humber region is at the very forefront of shipping, transport and related industries in this country and it is entirely sensible that these two high profile professional institutes should lead the way in promoting the best professional interests of those working in the marine sectors”, said Iain. “There is a vast wealth of maritime knowledge, expertise and experience in and around the Humberside community, said Captain Garbutt, and it is with great pleasure that I welcome the enterprise of these to internationally renowned institutes, of which Iain and I have separately been members for many years, to come together like this for an exchange of views and ideas right across the maritime spectrum.”

The event is organised jointly by the Humber branches of the IMarEST and the Nautical Institute. It is free of charge and open to members of the two institutes and to other non-member marine and seafaring professionals with an interest in marine engineering, nautical science and marine science and technology. A buffet and wine reception will follow the presentations and debate.
