What is CPD?
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
is defined as the systematic maintenance improvement and broadening
of knowledge and skill and the development of personal qualities
necessary for the execution of professional duties throughout
working life.
By undertaking CPD you will be:
• Demonstrating your continuing commitment
to your profession
• Developing your technical knowledge and skills in
your current field
• Broadening your technical knowledge and skills into
fields parallel to your own
• Acquiring non-technical knowledge and skills e.g.
management techniques, communication and presentation skills,
law, finance etc thus preparing you to assume greater or wider
responsibilities when the opportunities arise
What Constitutes CPD?
Acceptable CPD activity comes in many guises,
and its relevance to a particular members needs is equally
diverse depending on his stage of development. ‘One
is never too old to learn’ however, and any person who
considers he knows enough has stopped being a professional
in todays climate.
The question is what constitutes: ‘relevant
effective and productive’ activity in this area. Essentially
this is any activity which meets a personal CPD objective.
It is therefore important to give some thought to your CPD
objectives and record these. They may be general or specific.
e.g. “To improve my professionalism and competitive
position in the market place” or “to obtain a
detailed knowledge of the requirements of the new Code of
Practice for the Safety of Small Workboats and Pilot Boats”.
Within the foregoing parameters therefore,
the SSG Committee highlight the following CPD activities:
• Attendance at workshops, courses
and seminars and talks on relevant topics.
• Attendance at official Committees
and meetings where relevant topics are discussed.
• Attendance at relevant Trade Shows.
• Reading relevant Trade Periodicals.
• Reading relevant technical papers.
• Activities of a one-to-one nature
such as mentoring, lecturing on relevant subjects or “on
the job” training of less experience members.
